A few tips for decorating your fireplace

Some people say the fireplace itself is a grand decoration and you don’t necessarily need to decorate it, unless it’s Christmas time. We disagree though, but while we recognise that you shouldn’t just add any old knick-knacks to your fireplace mantel, you should add a personal touch where you can.

For example, if you have an oak mantel and you’re keen to add some personality to the lovely textured surround, you could choose to add photographs that mean something to you, such as family prints in frames or historic photographs that have been in your family for years.

Another way of decorating your fireplace is by taking inspiration from different seasons. As we are now in summer, you may decide to add vibrant potted plants, photographs in zesty frames or artwork that’s brimming with colour. Then as you move to Autumn, you could switch to reds, yellows, golds and burnt oranges, perhaps with pumpkins, conkers, acorns. These are just a few ideas to get the ball rolling, but we think you now catch our drift and you can apply decorative changes to any season.

Candles work very well on top of the mantel and this is because the warm flame complements that of the log fire. If you have one or two candles, you can add even more warmth to your fireplace as well as a beautiful scent, so this a wise option too.

There are also certain pieces of art that never go out of style and always serve a purpose, such as a decorative clock or a mirror. Having one or the other as a feature above the fireplace is a nice touch, and it’s one many homeowners choose and that’s because they both serve a practical purpose.
